Daily Devotion, 12/23/17, Mark 3:13-19, “With Before For”
“He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.” Mark 3:14-15 NLT
This passage marks a momentous event, the ordaining of The Twelve. Jesus had many disciples but The Twelve were handpicked as the select group of world changers who would establish His Church. They would preach like He preached, heal like He healed and cast out demons like He cast out demons. Their names would be forever immortalized in the Christian faith. Notice though that before God would do any of that through them, they had to consistently with Him.
There’s a little phrase in the passage that is so subtle that we can read right past it. That would be a big mistake because it was the key to their success. “He appointed twelve that they might be with him.” Before they were to work for Him they had to spend time with Him. For three years they followed Him. They listened, they learned and they asked dumb questions. He gave them answers that left them scratching their heads. They marveled at His miracles. They were moved by His compassion. They learned that the least was the greatest and that the call to follow was the call to serve. Jesus taught them how to pray, He taught them to forgive, He taught them how to live and later He would show them how to die. Only after spending that kind of time with Him were they ready to take on the world for Him.
The same is true for you. Do you want to God to do His God sized work through you? Do you want to be a force for God where you work, where you live or where you go to school? Do you want God to empower you as a healer, a restorer, a teacher, a leader or another type of anointed servant in His Kingdom? Do you want to live a life that will truly make a difference? The key is not in working harder or longer. They key is in what you do before you do anything else. The key is to simply be with Him. Spend some meaningful time with Jesus each day. Listen to His words. Learn from His life. Ask Him your questions and follow His counsel. Let Him breathe both correction and direction into you. Let Him show you how to live, how to serve and even how to die. Choose to be with Jesus each day, every day. It’s the being with Him that prepares you to make a difference for Him. You are loved!
PS My apologies for not being so “daily” with the Daily Devotions this week…been hunting.
