Daily Devotion, 12/26/17, Mark 4:35-41 “The Wind Whisperer”
“When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Silence! Be still!’ Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, ‘Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ The disciples were absolutely terrified. ‘Who is this man?’ they asked each other. ‘Even the wind and waves obey him!’” Mark 4:39-41 NLT
It’s amazing how fast our faith can falter. God will do one of His “only God” mini-miracles which leads us to tell people, “It had to be God!” A day or two later, we hit a different obstacle and we fall apart. It’s as though the God who took care of that can’t take care of this. The disciples had seen Jesus heal the sick, feed the masses and free the demon possessed. You’d think that their faith would have been rock solid but when they were hit by a powerful storm out in the open water, their faith faltered. Once again Jesus had to prove Himself to them. He showed that just as he was Lord over the sick, the hungry and the demon possessed, He was Lord over the storm.
He’s Lord over your storm too. Whatever it is you’re facing today, He can handle it. This particular problem may be new to you, but it is not new to Him. You may have never seen Him demonstrate His power in this way, but that doesn’t mean He can’t do it. You may be facing the winds of opposition from the evil one and a few seemingly evil people. Maybe waves of grief, despair, depression, anger, regret or resentment are rocking your boat. You may feel like you’re one blast of wind or one big wave away from sinking. You’re not. He’s Lord over your storm.
Look at how Jesus speaks with a firm voice to His disciples, not in anger, but like a friend trying to snap them back to reality. “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Don’t be consumed by fear, anxiety and faithlessness. Pray, believe, trust and rest in the One who is Lord of all…including your storm. You are loved!
