Daily Devotion, 12/09/17, “Give It To Him…And Rest”
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’” Matthew 11:28 NLT
Life has a way of loading us up and wearing us down. As a pastor, I sometimes get so busy doing the work of God that I neglect the work of God in me. When I begin to feel overwhelmed by life and disconnected from the One who is my life, it’s usually because I’m running at an unsustainable pace or carrying burdens that are not mine to carry.
My precious wife Sharon and I were talking two days ago about how wiped out she felt from the many demands on her these days. We prayed together twice that day specifically asking God to give her strength and to give her rest. Amazingly her mom, who she takes cares of everyday, made an obvious turn in her condition and had two of the best days she’s had in forever. Additionally, Sharon had two Beth Shalom ministry session cancelations that freed up six to eight hours in her schedule. Lastly, yesterday was an incredibly rare snow day here. Life slowed down for us as a family as we enjoyed a day of taking in the beauty of it all…along with some gumbo and potato salad J. The last 48 Hours or so have been a gift and exactly what we needed.
If you’re a little weary this morning, talk to God about it. He will give you the wisdom to prioritize and maximize your efforts, the strength to keep on keeping on and the rest that refreshes at the deepest level. I’ll leave you with my favorite paraphrase of this passage from Eugene Peterson’s “The Message.”
Matthew 11:28-30 The Message
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
You are loved!
