Daily Devotion, 01/10/18, “Love of Another Kind”
“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. Do to others as you would like them to do to you.” Luke 6:27-31 NLT
True confession, I have a good bit of growing to do in this area. Sometimes when I sit down to write these devotions, the weight of the passage and the conviction of the Holy Spirit is such that I have to spend more time than I had hoped to in reflection and repentance. This is one of those days.
I am a fairly relational person. I’d like to think that I love well but this is love of another kind. This is the love God shows to me. This is love for those who do not “deserve” my love. (As if any of us deserve love) This is love unconditional. This is love clothed in grace, humility and selflessness. This is love that may never be returned by the one I am loving. This morning, I’m going spend some more time reflecting on this passage and asking God to show me who I am not loving this way. Honestly, I don’t even have to ask. The list would include those who disagree with my conservative politics, people I invest in who still walk away, those who have intentionally tried to hurt Sharon, me or my kids and Alabama fans. Just kidding on that last one. I’ll leave you with the passage to wrestle with yourself.
May you be “willing to listen” to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to show you who you need to love with His love of another kind. May this be a sweet time of surrender and repentance for you. May you forever love others, especially the not so easy to love, with the agape love of God. You are loved!
