Daily Devotion, 10/27/2018, “The End?”
1 Peter 4:7-9 NIV
The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
A few years back, I helped a seasoned citizen much older than me think through options for eliminating the twenty-one thousand and then some dollars in credit card debt they had accumulated. When I asked them why they had racked up so many charges on so many cards they said, “I figured that sense these are the last days, it wouldn’t matter how much debt I had. When Jesus comes back, none of that will matter.” I told them that Jesus will return someday for sure but just in case that doesn’t happen right away, they need to pay off those cards.
Jesus said that only the Father knows when the end will come. (Matthew 24:36) Peter certainly didn’t know but he did hope that the return of Christ would happen during his lifetime which is why he wrote, “The end of all things is near.” I think that every generation sense Peter has hoped and thought that they would see the return of Christ. Someday, some generation will be the generation that sees His return. These may well be the end times and the last days but regardless of if they are or not, Peter gives us some things to focus on that include prayer, loving each other deeply and showing hospitality to one another. I taught on this last Sunday at CrossRoads, but I think the point is that focusing on the end times can cause us to neglect how we are to live at all times as Christ-followers. We should listen attentively as we pray so that God can tell us what He wants us to do. We should love others so well that they see the love of Jesus in us. If they see the love of Jesus and then open up their hearts to it, the “multitude of sins” that they have will be “covered.” We should do good things for one another and have a good attitude as we do them. If we do those things, we’ll be ready when Christ calls us home and we’ll have many others who are also ready because of the impact our lives had on theirs. You are loved!
PS I’m happy to report that all of that debt was paid off and that individual is now 100 percent debt free.
