Daily Devotion, 10/30/2018, “Are You Really Going to Wear That?”
1 Peter 5:5b-6 NIV All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,“God opposes the proudbut shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
With a high of 80 here today, I’ll be dressing much differently than I did this time last week in the Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania. It was 30 degrees with 20 mph winds as I ventured out for my morning hike up there. I’m not much into fashion, obviously, but I am into not freezing, not getting soaked and not having a heat stroke! More than any other factor, weather forecasts shape my fashion choices. What I clothe myself in is determined mostly by the conditions I’ll be doing life in throughout the day. Just as we dress in certain ways for certain days, there a specific attitudes and virtues that we need to intentionally clothe ourselves in each day before we head out. Peter writes that one of those is “humility toward one another.”
Humility includes listening to others instead of doing all the talking, asking for wisdom from others instead of trying to impress them with what you know, deferring to the needs of others even when it costs you your comfort and preferences…that kind of thing. When you choose to die to self so that you can love, serve and give with the strength, joy and humility that so characterized Jesus, God will give you favor and lift you up. When you act in pride, selfishness and arrogance, God opposes you. He loves you still but He simply cannot bless that.
As you get dressed for the weather where you are today, may you clothe yourself in humility. Enjoying the blessings of being humble beats eating humble pie any day!You are loved!
