Daily Devotion, 10/03/2018, “Come Close”
James 4:6b-10 NLT
“God opposes the proudbut gives grace (favor) to the humble.”So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
I enjoy watching real world homicide detectives (not actors) in cities like New Orleans, Tulsa and Memphis solve murder cases on the TV show, “The First 48.” Most of the time, the murderer is arrogant, hard core, street smart, unrepentant and full of lies. Occasionally, the murderer is broken, humble, honest and truly sorry for what they’ve done. Typically, they’re young teens who were raised right and basically good kids before they got caught up in the gang culture. Even hardened homicide detectives have a soft spot in their hearts for the rare few who are sorrowful, honest and humble.
I mention that because God is similarly moved when we humble ourselves and are broken, sorrowful, honest and repentant for the wrong we have done. God is so moved by our sincere brokenness, that He chooses to give us the opposite of what we deserve. Despite the weight of our sin, He chooses to give us grace, favor and honor.
That being said, He’d prefer that we avoid sinning altogether. The key to doing so is to “resist the devil” while also drawing “close to God.” Sin and temptation are all about proximity. When we come close to God, He comes close to us. When we resist the devil, he runs away from us. Keep your relationship with God strong and sin simply will not be an issue for you.
You are loved!
