Daily Devotion, 10/04/2018, “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda”
James 4:17 NLT If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
I tend to think of sin as the “thou shalt nots” of life…as those thoughts I shouldn’t think, words I shouldn’t say and things I shouldn’t do. These are “sins of commission” meaning that if I engage in these activities, I’m committing sin. There’s whole other category of sin that is much less obvious that I also need to be aware of. These are the “sins of omission” that I commit when I omit doing what I know God wants me to do. When I choose not forgive someone who’s wronged me, when I know God’s prompting me to help a stranger change a flat tire on a hot Louisiana afternoon but I keep on driving, when I know God wants me to bless the waitress with a little something extra but I give the standard fifteen percent tip…that kind of thing.
There’s plenty of bad you are to avoid but there is also plenty of good you are to do. You can’t do everything or solve every problem which is why it’s important that you follow God’s lead in this regard. “The good” you “ought to do” is the good that God leads you to do. If you do every good thing that you see needs to be done around you, you will burn out and give up. Only do the good God leads you to do and you’ll be able to do so for the long haul.
You are loved!
