Daily Devotion, 11/02/2018, “Effective and Productive”
2 Peter 1:3-9 NIV
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As I was praying with Micah before school yesterday, I prayed that God would help me to be efficient and productive in the few days I have here before heading north to hunt. The prayer was prompted by the long list of tasks to be done before I leave. Little did I know that I would read about being effective and productive 2 Peter this morning. Effective, efficient, productive…I need more of that!
Peter writes that the key to being effective and productive in what God has called us to is to “participate in the divine nature.” In other words, we’re at our best when we’re the most like Him. He empowers us to live God-like, godly lives that are marked by ever increasing measures of His nature. His nature in us shows up in us as faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love.
The key to doing more of what matters most is not working harder and smarter. The key is to walk so closely with God that His nature replaces yours. When you begin to think as He thinks and love as He loves, you will do what He is calling you and empowering you to do. That’s when you’re the most effective and productive. You are loved!
