Daily Devotion, 11/27/2018, “How Mature of Him”
1 John 1:8-9 NIV
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
There’s a funny Liberty Mutual auto insurance commercial that always makes me smile when I see it. A man is standing beside his wife talking about accident forgiveness and how Liberty Mutual doesn’t hold grudges. He then turns to his wife and says, “Did you hear that honey? Liberty Mutual doesn’t hold grudges. How mature of them.” She doesn’t say anything but the look on her face lets you know that she now has one more thing to hold against him.
The amazing thing about God’s grace is that it not only covers our sin by freely paying the penalty we deserve to pay, it also cleans us completely and gives us a fresh start. I know that I can forgive but I’m not sure it’s possible, or even wise in many cases, for me to forget as I forgive. That’s not an issue with God. He forgives us and He cleanses us. He doesn’t hold a grudge. He doesn’t drag the past back up again and again. As far as He is concerned, our sin is gone and our hearts are clean. When we confess, He forgives, He cleanses and He forgets.
The key is confession. I must own up to what I have done. I can’t blame it on someone else, minimize it or deny it. I have to own it before I can confess it but when I do, God is faithful to forgive, cleanse and forget. Verse nine says that in addition to being “faithful,” God is also “just.” Justice requires payment. The reason why my just God can forgive, cleanse and forget my sin is because Jesus did what justice required for me on the cross.
Thank God for His amazing grace today. Confess what you need to confess. Receive His forgiveness and the fresh start He offers you.
You are loved!
