Daily Devotion, 2/10/18, John 9:1-7, “God is On Your Side”
“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. ‘Rabbi,’ his disciples asked him, ‘why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?’ ‘It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,’ Jesus answered. ‘This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.’” John 9:1-3 NLT
“God hates me.” Ever feel that way? Most people have. Sometimes when life is not going as planned we can feel like God is not for us but actually against us. Jesus reminds us in this passage that the bad stuff in life isn’t the result of God being mad. The disciples assumed, as many people do, that somebody must have done something wrong that was deserving of God’s wrath for this man to have been born blind. Surely God was making someone pay for something. Jesus assured them that this wasn’t the case. Blindness happens sometimes and no one is to blame. That being said, blindness is an opportunity for God to work. In our passage, God wasn’t the cause of the blindness but He certainly was the cure.
The same is true for us in those moments when it feels like God is out to get us. We aren’t being punished because we did something bad or haven’t said enough prayers or haven’t given enough to the poor. Accidents happen. Traffic jams happen. Health issues happen. God doesn’t cause it all to happen, but I can promise you this, He’s with you when it does. He’s there to help calm your nerves. He’s there to help you let go of your anger, your frustration and your fear. He’s there to remind you that you worry way too much about things you can’t control and you sometimes don’t take care of the things you can. He doesn’t hate you. He’s not even mad. He loves you and He’s there in the midst of life’s messes to bring you healing, peace, wisdom and comfort.
You are loved!
