Daily Devotion, 2/24/18, “All For Love”
“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:12-13 NLT
This passage brings to mind the sacrificial service of the fire fighters, police officers and military warriors who risk it all for the good of others. You and I will most likely not have to literally lay down our lives for others as Jesus did on the cross or as our first responders and military are prepared to do every day. Thankfully, we won’t have to rush into a burning building, chase an armed bad guy down in the street or expose ourselves to enemy fire any time soon. For us, loving like Jesus will not require that level of “all in” risk and sacrifice. Nonetheless, it will require us to lay down our lives.
As soon as I drive up to my house most days, the boy next door rides over on his bike. Before I’m even out of my truck, he’s right there needing a tool of some sort, wanting to go shoot guns or play basketball or something. All I want to do is to unwind and relax after a long workday. It’s an opportunity to love like Jesus loved. When I get in the house and Micah needs help with a school project, it’s an opportunity to love like Jesus loved. When we’re done with supper and the sink is full of dirty dishes, it’s an opportunity to love like Jesus loved. You get the point. Opportunities to love like Jesus loved by laying down our lives present themselves multiple times every, most often in relatively small ways.
May you love like Jesus loved today. In big and small ways, may you lay down your life as you love those in your circle with all that you are. You are loved!
