Daily Devotion, 3/28/18, Day 26: Familiar with Our Suffering
Isaiah 53:3 “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.”
During the last week of Jesus' life, He would experience Judas' betrayal and Peter's denial. What hurts the heart more than having someone close to you turn their back on you and reject you? Jesus had poured His life into these men for 3 years. Let us not forget that Jesus was fully God and He was fully human. Our human hearts experience great pain when we are rejected. Our Savior's heart carried the pain of rejection and all of the transgressions of those who had and would ever live, including us. Unfathomable!!! Only the heart of a Savior motivated by extravagant and revolutionary love could bear such a burden, such a cross. Whatever suffering we face in this life, we know Jesus has felt the deepest pain imaginable and can comfort us in our pain as well. Jesus' cross made a way.
Jesus, please forgive us where we have denied or betrayed You in our lives. Help our hearts to stay loyal to You.
Reflect and Record:
* Invite Jesus into any places in your heart where you have been betrayed, denied, or deeply disappointed by someone. He understands and He heals. Ask Him to heal your heart.
* Forgive those who hurt you and give them to Jesus. He can right any wrong.
* Mark this moment by writing the person’s name whom you are forgiving on a piece of paper. Go outside and set the piece of paper on fire. As the paper disintegrates, may also your bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness disintegrate by the forgiveness accomplished by the cross of Jesus.
Read John 18-19 with great reverence as you take in how Jesus suffered on our behalf.
