Daily Devotion, 04/25/2018, “Voices and Choices”
“The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other…” Galatians 5:17 NLT
There’s more to the old imagery of the devil speaking into one ear while an angel speaks an opposite message in the other than you might think. The voices inviting us to do the ungodly flow from our sin nature and are influenced heavily by the kingdom of darkness. The voices inviting us to do the opposite flow from the Spirit of the Living God who resides in us. They are voices that require choices.
Paul says that the competing voices are constantly fighting each other within us. He describes them as desires given to us by the Spirit and the opposing sinful nature desires. It’s an internal war that is constantly raging. Those voices don’t stop when we make the decision to become a Christ-follower. The bad voice whispers words like, “Who will know?”, “What could it hurt?” and “Someone needs to set them straight!” But then there’s that other voice that whispers words like, “Do you think that’s a wise choice?”, “Is this who you want to be?” and “How do you think Jesus would react?” The choices you make based on the voices you hear will lead you either closer to God and all of the life and blessing He has for you or closer to the evil one and his destructive plans for your life.
So if you’ve been hearing voices in your head lately, you’re not crazy, at least, not completely crazy J It’s just the war within you. The voice you choose to follow becomes stronger every time you listen to it so listen to the good voice. You are loved!
