Daily Devotion, 4/04/18, Acts 5:12-16, “In the Shadow Of The Godly”
“As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by.” Acts 5:15 NLT
I am always amazed at how my precious wife Sharon and I can be in a room filled with people and within minutes someone has pulled her off to the side and is pouring out their heart to her. I saw it happen on Monday and again yesterday. There is a depth of compassion, wisdom and power that flows directly from the presence of the Spirit of God in her that draws people to her. To be in her presence is to be in the presence of God.
We see the same dynamic in the disciples. They had so yielded themselves to the work of God and the Spirit of God that the power of God was visibly flowing through them. Miracles were happening. People were being saved. People were being healed. The Presence that the disciples carried was so profound and powerful that they didn’t even have to touch people or pray for people for them to be healed. Just being in close proximity was enough. To be near a disciple was to be in the saving and healing presence of the living God so people just tried to get close. They would even drag their friends and family who needed healing out to the streets so that the disciples’ shadows might fall upon them. That’s all it took. When people got close, they were comforted, encouraged, and healed.
A good question to ask yourself from time to time is, “What do people experience when they experience me?” What impact does your presence have on others? Do they just experience you, as good or bad as that might be, or do they experience the Presence of the living God? Do they experience His comforting, encouraging and healing through you? Do they feel more loved, more hopeful and more inspired? Do they open their hearts to you because they sense the compassion, wisdom and power of God in you? Do they feel safe, loved and understood?
May you be so yielded to God that others experience Him when they experience you. You are loved!
