Daily Devotion, 05/17/2018, “Looking Ahead”
Philippians 3:17 NLT “Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.”
Back before our son Caleb became the bearded one that he is today, we did the Warrior Dash together near Baton Rouge. The race features a little swimming, a good bit of running and a variety of obstacles along the way. It’s not as tough as some adventure races but it is a good excuse to play in the mud so we did it. Throughout the race, I would run ahead of Caleb, show him how to do each obstacle and help him where I could. This pic captures well what the day was for me. I love how Caleb is looking, watching and following. I love that we’re in the race, the mud and the challenge together. The Christian life is much the same I think.
We need good and godly people running with us but also just ahead of us to show us the way. I’m thankful for the many people who got in the mud with me to show me how to persevere and to overcome. I’ve had excellent examples to follow including my mom and dad, student pastors, Sunday school teachers, my precious wife Sharon and several faithful and true friends. If you don’t have people like that in your life, I encourage you to be intentional about building those kinds of relationships. Ask God to connect you with a faithful few to run with and to follow. Join a life group, a small group or a ministry team so you can really get to know some folks. You need those good examples to run this race well.
If you’re a little further along in your race, invest some of what God has taught you and entrusted to you in the next generation of runners. They desperately need mentors, wise counselors and spiritual fathers and mothers.
You are loved!
