Daily Devotion, 05/19/2018, “Think About What You Think About”
Philippians 4:8 NIV “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
In just a little bit, I’ll be pedaling my Specialized Allez down the back roads as the sun comes up. I enjoy riding early on Saturdays because most of my world is still asleep. It’s most always a peaceful and refreshing ride and a time when my mind is relatively quiet. It’s always a good time for me to think because all I have to think about is not falling over or running into something. Having just read Philippians 4:8, at the moment I’m thinking about what I’ll be thinking about…or least the broad categories and general characteristics of what I’ll be thinking about. It’s easy in a culture inundated with massive volumes of bad news and negative information to allow your thoughts to be consumed by them. To think good thoughts about good things actually takes some effort these days. It’s not that we’re never to think about the bad stuff and to pray about our role in being part of the solution, it’s just that we have to dial it back sometimes and remind ourselves of the good things.
So as I ride this morning, I will choose to think about whatever is noble, true, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. Maybe if I do that now, my heart will have the faith and the hope to finish what the rest of this day’s “ride” has for me.
