Daily Devotion, 06/28/2018, “Be a Builder Upper”
1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 NLT For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us.Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
Discouraging words are easy to find. Just one click on your news feed and you’ll have all the reason you need to check out and go back to bed :) By the way, I encourage you to be kind and gracious to yourself as you start each day by refusing to check the news, social media posts, texts or emails until after your quiet time. Connect with God and get oriented for your day before allowing all of that info, some of which is negative or draining, to flood your mind and heart.
So I had this massive stack of stuff on my file cabinet at home that I decided to go through and file yesterday. It contained everything from old tax forms to a check I forgot cash but mostly it was made up of report cards, school pics, birthday cards and things our sons had made at school. I enjoyed looking back through old hand drawn Father’s Day cards, a scribbled note from Micah demanding to be home schooled (he never was in case you’re wondering) and some of Caleb’s earliest artwork. On the many cards and notes were numerous words of love and encouragement to each of us, some from within our family and some from dear friends. What an encouraging blessing it was to read back through those that were written to me years ago. The next time I have a bad day, I’m going to pull out my file and read those again!
Paul encourages us in our scripture today to “encourage each other and build each other up.” No matter how bad life can be at times, this life is not truly our life. We have eternity fixed in our hearts. We have the hope of heaven, where all will be good all of the time, to inspire us to keep on keeping on.
So be an intentional builder upper today. Be a lifter, an inspirer and a hope bringer. And be encouraged yourself, you have much to live for and to look forward to. You are loved!
