1 Thessalonians 2:8b NLT Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.
There’s an old saying that I come back to from time to time that simply says, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” It’s not true in all cases, like with the mechanic who works on my vehicles, a medical specialist in one area or another or the airline employee who points me towards the right gate. In those cases, what they know that I need to know is pretty much all that matters. If they happen to care about me, that’s a plus but what I need and want from them is information rather than empathy. As Christ-followers, we’d all likely agree that the “information” that is the good news of the gospel is something every person in our circle and every person on the planet for that matter, needs more than any other information out there in our information overload society. What we know is what they need but they are not likely to be receptive to it unless they know that we care for them as a person. Why is that?
I think John 3:16 has something to do with it, “For God so loved…” The message we bring is of a God who loves. It is a message that is felt as much as it is heard. We can preach it and teach it and write it and post it until the cows come home but if we don’t love well; if we don’t care first, it likely will not be felt and therefore not heard.
Paul writes that they didn’t just share the gospel, they also shared their lives. They added value to those in their circle in the everyday stuff of life because they genuinely cared for them. Because they loved well, the gospel of love that they spoke of was received by many.
Know the gospel message and always be willing and ready to communicate it. Just remember, it is a love story and the way you love is what brings that story to life. You are loved!
