Daily Devotion, 06/09/2018, “Final Instructions”
1 Thessalonians 5:14-18 NIV And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
“Don’t forget your lunch. Pay attention in class. Be careful crossing the street. Tuck your shirt in. Watch out for your sister.” Many of us remember receiving a similar set of last minute instructions from mom every school day as we were trying to get out the door. I catch myself doing the same thing with Micah before he gets out of my truck at SHHS. “Lead, don’t follow.” “Do the right thing even if it costs you everything.” “Take the way out when temptation comes.”
In our passage today, Paul begins wrapping up his letter to the Christ-followers in Thessalonica with his own last second list of timely dos and don’ts. Each phrase could take an entire letter to fully explain but Paul seemingly doesn’t have time for that so he just fires them out one after another.
It’s a pretty good list to consider as you begin your day. Read through it and ask God to show you if there are one or two instructions in particular that He wants you to focus on today. I’m connecting with, “warn those who are idle,” but I think that has more to do with wanting Caleb and Micah to help me with yard work today than it does with me personally. “Rejoice always,” I think that’s the one God wants me to zoom in on. Yesterday I smashed my middle finger on my right hand, our lawn mower wouldn’t start, I was kicked while shearing a wayward sheep and some upper respiratory sickness thing invaded my body. “Rejoice always.” Yep, I'll focus on that one.
Enjoy the weekend, be a blessing, savor the Sabbath, make a difference…there I go again :)
You are loved!
