2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 NIV So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
“Promise me that you will live a life that I can be proud of.” My mom spoke those words to me with tear filled eyes back when I was in the eighth grade. Another member of our family had just been arrested. I guess mom was hoping her words would keep me from going down the same path. I’m sure I’ve done some things over the years that she is less than proud of but for the most part, I’ve tried to honor her words. It wasn’t like I was striving to earn mom’s love and approval, I always had those unconditionally and in abundance, but I did want to make her proud.
All of us who carry the name of Jesus have a sacred calling to live up to. We are to do life in a way that is “worthy of his call” and that brings honor to him. It’s not like we’re striving to earn His love; we have that unconditionally and in abundance. It’s just that we have a higher standard…a personal holiness inspired and exemplified by Jesus that we are to walk in. Living this way is impossible if it’s dependent only on our will power and self-discipline. That’s why Paul finishes his exhortation with, “This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.” Just as it’s only through the grace of God that we can be forgiven for our sins, it’s only by the grace of God that we can live above sin and in a way worthy of our calling.
May you live a life that Jesus can be proud of. As you do, may you feel his smile, sense his love and be honored along with him.
You are loved!
