Daily Devotion, 08/29/2018, “By Faith”
Hebrews 11:1-3 NIV Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
From a logical perspective, you can only prove that which you can repeat and observe. For example, you can’t prove history because you can’t repeat it and observe it. What you can do is consider all of the possibilities and then deduce which one of the possibilities has the highest probability of being accurate based on the information you have available. Faith is something altogether different. As the writer of Hebrews writes in what some refer to as the faith chapter of the Bible, “faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Faith is not a function of logical thinking, human reasoning or the identification of the most probable of multiple possibilities.Faith is an “assurance” and a ‘confidence” that is oftentimes anything but logical and reasonable. Faith is not a fleeting emotion or a careless consideration; it is a settled confidence and a sure hope that leads to specific action. I’m thankful that God created us with the intellect to learn, to reason and to apply the learning and the wisdom of others. That’s all good and useful but God gave us something else, He breathed His life-giving Spirit into us. There is a deep, purely spiritual relationship between the Creator and those He created in His image. The assurance, hope and confidence that is faith flows from that relationship. Sometimes you just know in your spirit what you believe or what you need to do despite it not making a great deal of sense logically.
If you read on in chapter 11, you will see that “By faith” Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets and many others followed God with an assurance, confidence and hope that defied logic and opened the door for God to great things through them. May you discern and do on this day “by faith.”
You are loved!
PS: Hebrews 6:19 says, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul.” May it be so for you.
