Daily Devotion, 08/31/2018, “Because He Loves”
Hebrews 12:10-11 NLT For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
“A peaceful harvest of right living,” that sounds refreshing! The more “right living” I do, the more peace I “harvest.” Conversely, the more wrong living I do, the more chaos I create. Think about your story for just a moment and you’ll see this principle at work. You can quickly see how you traded your peace away for the temporary indulgence of one sin or another. Perhaps that’s part of your reality right now.
If you’re harvesting chaos and other negative consequences because you’re not living right in some area of your life, God will do all He can to encourage you to change your ways. As Hebrews 11:6 says, “the Lord disciplines those he loves.” Every bad thing that happens in your life is not the result of something bad you did but it’s always worth asking God the question, “Is this your discipline that I’m experiencing due to some bad living?” If you can connect the dots between the choices you’re making and the chaos you’re experiencing, then you’re likely being disciplined by your “Good, Good Father.” Because He loves you, He wants you to enjoy “a peaceful harvest of right living.”
You are loved!
