“Go Fish” Series, Part 4, “Fish Stories”

·      “You should’ve been here yesterday…”

See Barna survey about views of God, Christians and faith in US today. Methods must be relevant to the culture we live in today. “Evangelism Explosion” doesn’t work these days. Just different seasons, water temperature, water clarity, fish reproductive cycles, weather, tides, salinity levels, water levels and “luck” all impact where you fish, how you fish and what you fish with, our methods must be adaptable to our current conditions. Our message never changes, our methods change constantly. See Paul in Athens.

Acts 17:22-23 NLT

So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.

·     “Give them a fish and feed them for today. Teach them to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.”

Jessica Ryder’s story. (interview on stage) See Great Commission.

Matthew 28:19-20 NIV

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

·      “The one that got away…”

Our job is to fish. The actual “catching” is in God’s hands and theirs. When the fishing’s good, He gets all the credit. When we get skunked, we trust Him for tomorrow. See rich young ruler story.

Matthew 19:20-22 NIV

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Romans 10:16 NIV

But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”

·      “You can’t catch ‘em from the couch.”

You have to go fishing to catch fish. Get off the couch, gear up and go fish! See “How can they hear if they are not told” scripture.

Romans 10:9-15 NLT

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
