Daily Devotion, 09/18/2018, “Wisdom to Persevere”
James 1:2-5 NIV Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
If there’s ever a time that we need wisdom from God, it’s when we’re facing “trials of many kinds” that test our faith. I ask God for wisdom when I’m facing significant decisions. I also ask God to give me His wisdom when someone is asking me for “wise counsel” regarding something they’re going through. Sometimes I even ask for wisdom about the simple stuff of life like where I should hunt on a particular morning or what route should I drive to some distant destination. God gladly gives me the discernment, insight and wisdom I need to make the wise choice in both the big and the small decisions of life if I’ll simply ask. I love that God does that but in this passage James connects asking God for wisdom specifically to facing “trials of many kinds” that test our faith.
“Trials of many kinds” come to all of us regardless of our standing with God. The key to persevering rather than just surviving is to ask God for wisdom. Without His wisdom, you will not become “mature and complete, not lacking for anything” when the days grow dark. Without His wisdom, you will likely see all of the pain and none of the purpose. Without His wisdom, you will likely build protective walls around your heart when you should be drawing close to Him and leaning in to others. Without His wisdom, you will make decisions out of fear, hurt and anger rather than out of faith, hope and love. Without his wisdom, you will be consumed by anxiety, discouragement and depression rather than built up with peace, inspiration and joy. Don’t do that. Instead, just ask Him for wisdom.
You are loved!
