“You Asked for It” Series, Question 2, “What About Hell?”

This morning at CrossRoads:

“You Asked for It” Series, Question 2, “What About Hell?”

Your questions:

• Do people who’ve never heard the Gospel go to hell?

Romans 1:20 NIV

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Romans 2:12-14 NIV

All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.

• Do people who commit suicide go to hell?

I Kings 8:39b NIV (From King Solomon’s Prayer)

Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know every human heart)…

• How can a God of love send people to hell?

What About Hell? Three Possibilities:

1. Hell is another OPPORTUNITY for ALL to come to Christ.

From Rob Bell's book, “Love Wins:"

• God’s purpose in punishment is to Restore:

Israel in OT Prophecies, Sodom and Gomorah

Paul handing “people over to Satan”

• God’s Gets what he wants because He’s God and God doesn’t want anyone to go to hell.

• Sending someone He loves to spend an eternity in hell based soley on the decisions made during a relatively short lifetime here with the love, mercy, kindness and compassion that is the very nature of God.

2. Hell is a sentence to DIE but not a place to eternally EXIST.

March 30, 2018: 93-year-old avowed atheist reporter, Eugenio Scalfari, said that he asked Pope Francis about the fate of "bad souls." He reported that the pontiff responded, "Hell does not exist. The disappearance of sinful souls exists." The Catholic News Service wrote:

"According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 'immediately after death, the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire." '

" 'The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs,' the catechism says."

As a final bit of proof that Pope Francis truly holds the belief that hell is real, the religious news outlet offered this bit of fire-and-brimstone bit of advice: "Convert, there is still time for not ending up in hell. It is what is waiting for you if you continue on this path."

3. Hell is a place of ETERNAL PUNISHMENT.

Insights from Scripture:

• God will “JUDGE” us all someday.

Hebrews 9:27-28 NIV

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Romans 14:11 NIV (Quoting Isaiah 45:23)

It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’”

• God wants ALL of us to live FOREVER with Him.

2 Peter 3:9 NIV

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

1 Timothy 2:3-6 NIV

This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

• God made a WAY for us to LIVE eternally with Him.

John 3:16-17 NIV

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Neither of the three "perish" possibilities is good. Remove all doubt by believing in Jesus and receiving life from Him.
