Daily Devotion, 01/11/2019, “Humble Repentance”
Psalm 51:1-3, 10-12 NIV
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Create in me a pure heart, O God,and renew a steadfast spirit within me.Do not cast me from your presenceor take your Holy Spirit from me.Restore to me the joy of your salvationand grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
If you’ve ever felt like something you did disqualified you from being loved by God and used by God, go read Psalm 51. King David had committed adultery and then tried to hide his sin by having the woman’s husband put on the front lines of battle and then left alone so that he would be killed. Adultery and murder…those are some of the deepest and darkest of sins. The reality is that God is drawn to your humility and your honesty before Him far more than He is to your perfection and performance. When you are broken, honest, open, contrite and humble in regard to your sin, God forgives, restores, redeems and renews as only He can.
Verses 16 and 17 say, “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.My sacrifice, O God, isa broken spirit; a broken and contrite heartyou, God, will not despise.” What God wants from you when you fall is for you to be so broken by your sin that you honestly and humbly own what you’ve done. From there you can repent, which is to go in a different direction, and receive forgiveness and restoration. “…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) Humble yourself, pray, seek His face and go in a different direction then you will be forgiven, restored and healed.
Ask God if there is anything that you need to confess to Him and repent of. Act on what He shows you with honesty and humility.You are loved!
