Daily Devotion, 01/23/2019, “Our One Mission”
After His life, death and resurrection, Jesus had a few final words for His apostles. He was about to return to the Father’s side and send His Spirit to be with us and in us but there was one last point He wanted to make before leaving. Knowing that these would be His last recorded words, He spoke of what was of the greatest importance to Him. Even after spending years with Jesus, hearing Him teach, watching Him heal and experiencing His love, the apostles still didn’t understand the mission. They wanted Jesus to do more. Specifically, they wanted Him to establish Israel as a global superpower which was totally not the point or the mission. The mission would be accomplished by His followers through the power of the Holy Spirit, not by Jesus directly. The mission would be to share the Good News of the Gospel as His “witnesses” locally, nationally and internationally.
Acts 1:6-8 NIV Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Your mission, my mission and the mission of all Christ-followers is to take the message of Jesus to everyone from the neighbor next door to the three billion unreached people on the planet. We can’t possibly hope to accomplish our mission without the power of the Holy Spirit working in us and through us and the key to that happening is simply prayer. Our prayer focus on this 18th of our 21 Days is missions; for all of us “missionaries” here at home, others across the nation and our brothers and sisters around the world. Ask God to give you a greater compassion for the lost. Ask Him to empower you to join Him in His mission to save them. Lift your prayers for your brothers and sisters in distant places to have all of the anointing, favor, wisdom and provision they need to be His witnesses where they are. You are loved!
