Daily Devotion, 01/07/2019, “I Need Him”
John 15:15 NLT
“I (Jesus) am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”
I realized a long time ago that what I could come up with on my own was vastly insufficient to do what God has called me to do. I simply do not possess the knowledge, wisdom, foresight, love and giftedness naturally to do anything eternally significant with my life. In this first week of the 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, the focus will be on strengthening our connection to, worship of and dependence on Jesus. Jesus said, “apart from me you can do nothing.” He’s saying that without a consistent, nurturing, life giving relationship with Him, we won’t have His life, wisdom, love and power growing in and flowing through us. Without Him, we will do only what we’re capable of doing on our own. What we accomplish on our own may be good, bad or indifferent but it will not be what He created us and gifted us to do. From His perspective, all that we do apart from Him adds up to “nothing.” The opposite is true if we stay connected to Jesus. Philippians 4:13 says, “For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” We can either “do nothing” or “do everything,” it all depends on our dependence on Jesus. What we do “through Christ” and what we allow Him to do through us is what matters most in our lives.
We’ll spend most of this week in John 15. Ask Jesus to show you anything in your life that is limiting your connection to and dependence on Him. You are loved!
