Daily Devotion, 02/13/2019, “Turn Up the Heat”
Jesus had this to say to the church/Christ-followers in the city of Laodicea: Revelation 3:15-16 NLT “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!”
I like the vision statement coined by Willow Creek Community Church years ago, “To turn irreligious people into fully devoted followers of Christ.” All in, 100 percent, nothing held back devotion and commitment to following Jesus should be the norm for Christians rather than the exception. The expectation of Jesus is that we’ll either be all in or completely out but not vacillating somewhere in between. For sure there is grace and space in the heart of Christ for those who are seeking Him and trying to figure out what they believe. (see Matthew 9:23-25) However, for those of us who claim to have already put our faith in Jesus, the expectation is that we will be all in all the time, living with a red hot passion for Him that impacts everything we do and everyone in our circle.
So how are you doing spiritually? What’s your temperature these days? If your passion has dropped to warm or even cold, what needs to change in how you do life and how you relate to Jesus for you to get fired up again? Maybe it’s kind of like falling in love and then staying in love. Falling in love is effortless but staying in love requires that you intentionally do the same kinds of things you did to fall in love in the first place. May you rediscover the lover of your soul. May you do those things that will fire up your passion for Jesus. May you burn hot Him as you refuse to settle for a lukewarm, comfortable and passionless life.
You are loved!
