Daily Devotion, 02/25/2019, “A River Runs Through It”

Revelation 22:1-2, 17 NIV

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

The Bible begins and ends in a glorious garden with a river running through it. In the newly created Garden of Eden in Genesis 2, all life flourishes. There is no fallenness, brokenness, death or loss. Man is in complete harmony with God, His creation and each other. We all know the story of the fall. Love for God and submission to God require that we choose Him meaning also that we have the free will to not choose Him. When Adam and Eve chose to sin, they sat in motion a chain of events that led to their banishment from and the eventual destruction of the garden. It was symptomatic of the break between the Creator and His created loved ones caused by our sin.

At the end of the story of scripture in Revelation 22, Eden is restored. “The river of the water of life, as clear as crystal” flows from the throne of God beckoning all who are thirsty to come and drink in the free gift of life found only in those healing waters. In the millennia between the two gardens, man sins, Jesus comes and life is restored.

I resonate with the hope of Eden restored because it is many ways a picture of my own personal restoration. I rejected God. I chose another. I was fallen. I was thirsty. And thankfully, I was restored as I drank in the healing waters of Jesus. The Bible ends with these words in Revelation 22:21, “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.” I am beyond blessed that His grace is with me and I pray that it is with you as well.

You are loved!
