Daily Devotion, 02/27/2019, “Bring It!”
So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Even after all the disciples had experienced with Jesus, they were still looking for Him to do more. Specifically, the wanted Him to “free Israel and restore” their kingdom. They wanted Him to supernaturally defeat the Romans who ruled their land and return the kingdom of Israel to the people of Israel. Their focus was not on the will of God or the Kingdom of God, it was on themselves and their people. I can relate to that. It’s easy to get focused on my “kingdom,” my will, my desires and my agenda all while unintentionally forgetting why God has me here and what He wants me focused on.
I love how Jesus shifted the focus from Him doing something for them and their little kingdom to them doing something for Him, the Kingdom of God and every person in every corner of the world. Jesus wasn’t concerned about freeing and restoring Israel, His mission was vastly greater than that. He wanted the disciples to free and restore people everywhere. He had taught them how to love, live, heal, teach, pray and serve. Now it was time for Him to return to the Father’s side and for them to start doing the work of bringing the Kingdom. Under the “power of the Holy Spirit,” they would be His “witnesses, telling people about” Him everywhere.
These days that mission is ours. Stop focusing on your little kingdom and all that you want God to do to fix it. Focus on His Kingdom and what He wants you to do to bring it. You are loved!
