Daily Devotion, 03/06/2019, “Everyday Prophets”
Acts 2:14-18 NLT
Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy.”
Again, to receive visions from God while we’re awake, have meaningful dreams from God while we’re asleep and speak out prophetic words entrusted to us by God are all normal manifestations of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives according to this passage and the rest of the NT. Concerning prophetic words, oftentimes they do not involve the forthtelling of future events but are instead words from God entrusted to a Christ-follower to pass on to another person so that it might encourage them, bless them and instruct them on their spiritual journey. I think that God can use all of us that way. I’m learning to ask God if there’s anything He wants to say through me in most every conversation I have these days. I’m listening to what the person is saying to me but at the same time, I’m listening what the Holy Spirit is saying to me. Often I don’t perceive anything specific but when I do, I pass it along to them saying something like, “I think God wants me to tell you that…” or “What I’m sensing from God for you is…” It may have nothing to do with what they’re telling me or everything to do with it. It’s not my place to figure it all out. My part is only to pass on what, if anything, God is wanting to say to them through me. God can use you the same way. May all be “everyday prophets” who faithfully pass on the words God entrusts us with. You are loved!
PS I’ve been at our hunting camp without signal the last couple of days and was unable to post. Blessings!
